A Cow for Happy Home

Cows for Happy HomeCows for Happy Home in Stable

In honor of their grandchildren, a generous couple gave money to purchase a cow for Happy Home for Children. The grandchildren named the cow Lucky. Now the children at Happy Home feel especially lucky because the cow came with a calf. The milk from this cow will bring much needed nutrition to the children’s diet.

The couple recently emailed us and said, "Our grandkids are very excited about the calf. We're calling her 'Little Lucky.' We got some good laughs about how that name will work when she grows up. This has been a great family project."

A Van for All Seasons
Van for St. Elizabeth'sVan for St. Elizabeth'sThe sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary are a very service-oriented group in India. They operate schools, orphanages (including one for orphans who are HIV-positive), rescue children from child labor situations and educate the children of prostitutes.

The sisters at St. Elizabeth’s Children’s Home have visited rural villages for the past 55 years helping the poor. Beginning in 1999 they began to set up rural women’s self-help groups and they currently have programs for women in 10 villages and education centers in 15 villages.

Until very recently they made the rounds to these villages every day by bus or auto-rickshaw. But when they told us that for just $3,000 they could buy a mini-van which Auto-RickshawAuto-Rickshawwould take them to villages and transport the sick to hospitals, we knew we had to help.

Thanks to donations from many different people, World's Children was able to buy this van for them.

Previously to reach some of the impoverished families, the sisters would take an auto-rickshaw like the one pictured on the left. An auto-rickshaw is a small, three-wheeled taxi. Auto-rickshaws are used throughout India.

Most of our homes own no transportation. A few, like Balavikasitha Orphanage have just a motor scooter as their transportation. Imagine caring for the needs of 35 children with just a motor scooter.Motor ScooterAdministrators of Balavikasitha Orphanage with several children ride by motor scooter
