Assist a College Student

For as little as $50/month, you can help a needy student receive a college diploma and rise out of the cycle of poverty. World’s Children is pleased to report that we are able to support 70 college students for the 2011-12 academic year. The photo below shows the students we currently sponsor at ETCM School of Nursing in India with the World's Children Executive Director David Purviance who is standing in the back row.

EXAMPLE OF TWO STUDENTS WE ARE HELPING

ChonaChona is studying to be an engineer.Chona and her two brothers and one sister were abandoned when Chona was just 19 months old. Her mother suddenly left the family and shortly after her father brought all four children to the Home of Joy in the Philippines. They have not seen their parents since and were declared by the courts to be legally abandoned. Over the next 16 years the four siblings stayed together: a family without parents. Here is what Chona wrote about her experience growing up.

Chona's story in her own words:
At the institution, orphaned and abandoned children like us always look forward to the time that some couple or family will take notice of us and eventually adopt us. I must confess that envy crept into my heart whenever some children leave for adoption. I also longed to be with a permanent family. But I cannot leave alone; I have to be with my siblings too, which makes it quite hard to find a match. But that longing was only when I was still a little girl. Today I have reconciled with the reality of my situation. I am better off this way together with my immediate family, my brothers and sister.

For a number of years Chona was sponsored by a woman who was a medical doctor in the US. When her sponsor died in 2009, World’s Children was unable to find another sponsor for Chona due to her age. But Chona is emotionally resilient and has goals for her life. At 17 years of age she is enrolled in a university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

She has applied to World’s Children for a scholarship to help pay for her college fees. She needs $1,730 per year. We are providing a partial scholarship.
